Impact of overnight sleep condition on acute mountain sickness

Name of research institute or organization:
Mt. Fuji Research Institute

Title of project:
Impact of overnight sleep condition on acute mountain sickness

Project leader and team:
Masahiro HORIUCHI

Project description:

We investigated influence of overnight sleep on acute mountain sickness (AMS) during short-stay at Mt.Fuji. Four healthy males participated in this study. Overnight sleep condition and AMS score were measured throughout nights for three days. As a result, total sleeping hours, sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and waking hours during night got worse, respectively. In contrast, AMS score did not change so much during three days, indicating that sleep disturbance may not be related to AMS score. Further studies are required to increase sample size, and to investigate relevant factors.
